Following a surprising upset at the Kentucky Derby, this year's Preakness Stakes looks to be one for the history books. Furthermore, with the top two horses from Kentucky Derby electing to sit out after an unusual finish this year could be high on surprises. Anything can happen! See some short profiles of the best horses in the Preakness Stakes here:

Code of Honor

  • Trainer- Shug McGaughey
  • Jockey- John Velasquez

Code of Honor was the 3rd to cross the line at the Kentucky Derby but was awarded the Silver Medal due to the disqualification. Look for a good position for betting at Preakness Stakes too.

  • Trainer- Bob Baffert
  • Jockey- Irad Ortiz

This horse is the best finisher from Baffert from the previous race, which had two other teammates from the same stable. It's noted that the Preakness Stakes might be well suited for Improbable; this could mean some good lines on this horse.

Game Winner

  • Trainer- Bob Baffert
  • Jockey- Joel Rosario

Game Winner won some big races as a two-year-old, but his performance has been suffering lately. And the Kentucky Derby doesn't really seem to lend evidence that the horse is improving. However, if you want some good upset odds for Preakness, Game Winner could be it.

War of Will

  • Trainer- Mark Casse
  • Jockey- Tyler Gaffalione

War of Will looked strong in the early stages of the first leg of the Triple Crown but faded near the end. However, don't write him off just yet. Preakness is better suited to this horse's strengths.

  • Trainer- Blaine Wright
  • Jockey- Javier Castellano

This horse had a strong show as runner-up in Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby. Hopefully, its odds will continue to improve and stay near the top of the lines.

  • Trainer- Kelly Rubley
  • Jockey- Daniel Centeno

This horse is on a winning streak with an 11 1/2- length win in his last start. A solid victory to be coming off of before the big race at Pimlico.

  • Trainer- Brad Cox
  • Jockey- Florent Geroux

The latest high profile race from Owendale was the 8th place finish in the Grade 2 Risen Star that took place on Feb 16.

Bourbon War

  • Trainer- Mark Hennig
  • Jockey- Irad Ortiz, Jr.

This horse has potential as it has recently placed 2nd at the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth behind top seed, Code of Honor.

  • Trainer- Ken McPeek
  • Jockey- Brian Hernandez, Jr.

Signalman's best performance comes from the Blue Grass Stakes in his last start where he placed third.

Laughing Fox

  • Trainer- Steve Asmussen
  • Jockey- Ramon Vazquez

Laughing Fox got an automatic bid for the Preakness Stakes by winning the Oaklawn Invitational just after the Kentucky Derby, however, he has not been on the board in two other big races.

The race comes two weeks after Kentucky and is shortly followed by the Belmont Stakes two weeks after. It’s a historical event and one of the biggest horse races in the world, along with the two other Triple Crown races.

In 2018, all eyes were on Justify who had won at Kentucky and were left in awe as the horse completed part-two of the famous triple, before going on to become only the 13th Triple Crown winner. Many dreams die at the Preakness race, but many more come true.

Preakness Stakes Online Betting: Picks & Predictions

The only horse guaranteed a spot in the race is the winner of the Kentucky Derby. The other 11 horses, the rankings are often done based on the money earned in the season. It’s a similar system to the Kentucky Derby and therefore a lot of the field will be the same.

The seven-time winning trainer Bob Baffert trained last year’s winner and he will be hoping to add an eighth title to his collection. With a few fancied horses likely to be in the race, and the horse that took over the retired Justify’s stall, Improbable, already a favorite.

Another favorite pick in the Preakness betting is Game Winner, another horse who is trained by Baffert with another horse of his, Mucho Gusto, also expected to place highly by some. A Baffert top three would be an incredible feat but it is a possibility this year in the Preakness results.

There are many other trainers hoping for glory though with Instagrand being another popular choice along with the likes of Vekoma and War of Will who will also have a great chance of being the top horse in the Preakness results.

There have been many horses that have come from long odds to win though with Cloud Computing being 13/1 for the race in 2017, and there can always be a shock in the Preakness results. A lot of the form is decided by the Kentucky Derby with a lot expected of the horses that finished strongly in that race.

Preakness Stakes History

The event is always held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and that means it is held on the 3rd Saturday of May. It is held on the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore and instead of roses being thrown over the winner, it’s yellow flowers giving it the nickname of The Run For The Black-Eyed Susan.

At the end of the Preakness results, we will know if the Triple Crown is alive or whether another horse has taken its share of the glory. This year, unfortunately, a triple crown won't be possible. Justify was the 36th horse who has won the first two legs of the Triple Crown with 13 of those horses going on to triple glory.

It’s the shortest of the three Triple Crown races as it’s 1,900 meters long which is 100 meters less than Kentucky and 500 meters less than Belmont. The race is the second highest attended horse event in the country, second only to the Derby.

It’s one of the most prestigious races in the world and a huge event in the American sports calendar. As with the Kentucky Derby, the horses have to be thoroughbreds that are three years old in order to qualify for the race.

Another popular feature of the race is its InfieldFest where many fans will enjoy having a drink while watching the horse racing and doing their Preakness betting, accompanied by musical acts and other festivities. The race has a vibrant atmosphere, especially as you used to be able to bring your own drinks.

The race though is a wonderful event and one that is very well attended. Secretariat holds the speed record in 1973 on his way to winning the Triple Crown. Once Preakness results are finalized, there can often be great anticipation if the Triple Crown is still on.
